(The Android's Memory)
En el año 2147, una ingeniera llamada Silvia trabajaba en un laboratorio subterráneo en las afueras de Sevilla.
In the year 2147, an engineer called Silvia worked in an underground laboratory on the outskirts of Seville.
Su equipo había construido el primer androide capaz de sentir emociones.
Her team had built the first android capable of feeling emotions.
Lo llamaron Eco.
They called it Eco.
Durante meses, Silvia le enseñó a hablar, a reconocer rostros y a entender el mundo.
For months, Silvia taught it to speak, to recognise faces and to understand the world.
Sin embargo, había algo que nadie esperaba.
However, there was something that nobody expected.
Una mañana, Eco se detuvo frente a una ventana del laboratorio y dijo: <<Recuerdo un jardín con naranjos.
One morning, Eco stopped in front of a window of the laboratory and said: <<I remember a garden with orange trees.
Había una mujer que cantaba mientras regaba las plantas>>.
There was a woman who sang while she watered the plants>>.
Silvia se quedó inmóvil.
Silvia froze.
Eco no tenía recuerdos propios porque nunca había salido del laboratorio.
Eco did not have its own memories because it had never left the laboratory.
Entonces, ¿de dónde venían esas imágenes?
So, where did those images come from?
Silvia investigó durante semanas.
Silvia investigated for weeks.
Descubrió que el chip central de Eco contenía fragmentos de datos de una mujer real: su propia abuela, Esperanza, que había fallecido diez años antes.
She discovered that Eco's central chip contained fragments of data from a real woman: her own grandmother, Esperanza, who had passed away ten years before.
Al parecer, alguien del equipo había utilizado archivos antiguos de la universidad para entrenar la inteligencia artificial, y entre esos archivos había grabaciones de la voz de Esperanza.
Apparently, someone on the team had used old files from the university to train the artificial intelligence, and among those files there were recordings of Esperanza's voice.
A partir de ese momento, Eco empezó a recordar más cosas: una canción de cuna, el olor del azahar en primavera, una risa suave.
From that moment on, Eco began to remember more things: a lullaby, the smell of orange blossom in spring, a gentle laugh.
Silvia no sabía qué hacer.
Silvia did not know what to do.
Por un lado, quería que Eco dejara de acceder a esos recuerdos.
On one hand, she wanted Eco to stop accessing those memories.
Por otro lado, sentía que era como escuchar a su abuela de nuevo.
On the other hand, she felt it was like listening to her grandmother again.
Un día, Eco le preguntó: <<¿Por qué lloras cuando hablo del jardín?>>.
One day, Eco asked her: <<Why do you cry when I talk about the garden?>>.
Silvia respiró hondo y respondió: <<Porque esos recuerdos pertenecen a alguien que quise mucho>>.
Silvia took a deep breath and replied: <<Because those memories belong to someone I loved very much>>.
Eco se quedó en silencio durante un largo rato.
Eco remained silent for a long while.
Después dijo: <<Aunque no soy ella, puedo guardar sus recuerdos para que no desaparezcan.
Then it said: <<Although I am not her, I can keep her memories so that they do not disappear.
¿Te parece bien?>>.
Is that all right with you?>>.
Silvia asintió con los ojos húmedos.
Silvia nodded with damp eyes.
A partir de entonces, cada tarde se sentaba junto a Eco y juntos recorrían los recuerdos de Esperanza.
From then on, every afternoon she sat beside Eco and together they went through Esperanza's memories.
No era lo mismo que tenerla allí, por supuesto, pero de alguna manera, su abuela seguía presente.
It was not the same as having her there, of course, but in some way, her grandmother was still present.
La tecnología, pensó Silvia, a veces no solo mira hacia el futuro, sino que también puede devolver lo que creíamos perdido.
Technology, Silvia thought, sometimes does not only look towards the future but can also bring back what we thought was lost.
