(The Treacherous GPS)
Marta y su marido Paco tenían que llegar a una boda en Córdoba antes de las cinco de la tarde.
Marta and her husband Paco had to arrive at a wedding in Córdoba before five in the afternoon.
Por lo tanto, salieron de Madrid a las diez de la mañana con tiempo de sobra.
Therefore, they left Madrid at ten in the morning with plenty of time.
Paco había comprado un GPS nuevo la semana anterior y estaba deseando probarlo.
Paco had bought a new GPS the previous week and was eager to try it out.

Al principio, todo iba bien.

Paco respondió: <<Tranquila, el GPS sabe lo que hace>>.
Paco replied: <<Relax, the GPS knows what it is doing>>.
Media hora más tarde, estaban perdidos en medio de un olivar.
Half an hour later, they were lost in the middle of an olive grove.
El GPS repetía: <<Recalculando ruta>>.
The GPS kept repeating: <<Recalculating route>>.
Marta cruzó los brazos y no dijo nada, lo cual era peor que cualquier grito.
Marta crossed her arms and said nothing, which was worse than any shout.
De repente, vieron a un pastor con sus ovejas.
Suddenly, they saw a shepherd with his sheep.
Paco bajó la ventanilla y le preguntó: <<Disculpe, ¿sabe cómo llegar a Córdoba?>>.
Paco rolled down the window and asked him: <<Excuse me, do you know how to get to Córdoba?>>.
El pastor se rio y contestó: <<Pues desde aquí, lo más rápido es volver a Madrid y empezar de nuevo>>.
The shepherd laughed and replied: <<Well, from here, the fastest way is to go back to Madrid and start over>>.
Al final, llegaron a la boda dos horas tarde.
In the end, they arrived at the wedding two hours late.
La novia ya había cortado la tarta y el novio estaba recogiendo las sillas.
The bride had already cut the cake and the groom was putting away the chairs.
Marta le quitó el GPS a Paco y lo metió en el fondo de su bolso.
Marta took the GPS from Paco and put it at the bottom of her bag.
Paco le prometió que nunca más usaría ese aparato, aunque ambos sabían que era mentira.
Paco promised her that he would never use that device again, although they both knew it was a lie.
La semana siguiente, Marta encontró a Paco en el garaje con un GPS todavía más nuevo. <<Este tiene mapas actualizados>>, le explicó con una sonrisa nerviosa.
The following week, Marta found Paco in the garage with an even newer GPS. <<This one has updated maps>>, he explained to her with a nervous smile.
Marta suspiró, cogió las llaves del coche y dijo: <<Esta vez conduzco yo.
Marta sighed, grabbed the car keys and said: <<This time I am driving.
Y tú te encargas de leer el mapa de papel>>.
And you are in charge of reading the paper map>>.
Paco no protestó.
Paco did not protest.
Al fin y al cabo, había aprendido que a veces lo antiguo funciona mejor que lo moderno.
After all, he had learned that sometimes the old works better than the new.
