Elena se despertó antes del amanecer, como hacía todos los sábados desde hacía más de veinte años.
Elena woke up before dawn, as she had done every Saturday for more than twenty years.
Sin embargo, aquella mañana fue diferente.
However, that morning was different.
Mientras se vestía en la oscuridad, sintió un dolor agudo en la rodilla derecha.
While she was getting dressed in the dark, she felt a sharp pain in her right knee.

Elena sonrió y preparó una ración extra.
Elena smiled and prepared an extra portion.
Mientras freía los churros, observó a la niña que esperaba de puntillas, con los ojos muy abiertos.
While she was frying the churros, she watched the little girl who was waiting on tiptoe, with her eyes wide open.
De repente, recordó su propia infancia: el mismo olor dulce, las mismas manos impacientes.
Suddenly, she remembered her own childhood: the same sweet smell, the same impatient hands.
