Fernando había decidido que sería mago callejero.
Fernando had decided that he would be a street magician.
Había comprado un kit de magia por internet y había practicado durante dos semanas enteras en su salón.
He had bought a magic kit online and had practised for two whole weeks in his living room.
Su gato, Pelusa, era su único público, y no parecía muy impresionado.
His cat, Pelusa, was his only audience, and it did not seem very impressed.
Aun así, Fernando estaba convencido de que triunfaría en la Plaza del Pilar.
Even so, Fernando was convinced that he would triumph in the Plaza del Pilar.
Aquella mañana de sábado, Fernando llegó a la plaza con su capa negra, su sombrero de copa y una maleta llena de trucos.
That Saturday morning, Fernando arrived at the square with his black cape, his top hat and a suitcase full of tricks.
Se colocó junto a la fuente y gritó: <<Damas y caballeros, prepárense para lo imposible>>.
He positioned himself next to the fountain and shouted: <<Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourselves for the impossible>>.
Solo había tres personas mirando, y una de ellas era una paloma.
There were only three people watching, and one of them was a pigeon.
Su primer truco era sacar un conejo de su sombrero.
His first trick was to pull a rabbit out of his hat.
Pero como no tenía conejo, había metido un calcetín enrollado.
But since he did not have a rabbit, he had put a rolled-up sock inside.
Metió la mano en el sombrero con mucho drama, tiró del calcetín y lo levantó con orgullo.
He put his hand into the hat with great drama, pulled out the sock and held it up with pride.
Una señora mayor lo miró con confusión. <<Eso es un calcetín>>, dijo ella. <<No, señora, es un conejo muy tímido>>, respondió Fernando sin dudar.
An elderly lady looked at him with confusion. <<That is a sock>>, she said. <<No, madam, it is a very shy rabbit>>, replied Fernando without hesitating.
El segundo truco fue peor.
The second trick was worse.
Fernando intentó hacer desaparecer una moneda, pero se le cayó al suelo y rodó hasta los pies de un policía municipal.
Fernando tried to make a coin disappear, but he dropped it on the ground and it rolled to the feet of a municipal police officer.
El agente la recogió y se la devolvió. <<Tenga cuidado, que las monedas no crecen en los árboles>>, le dijo con una sonrisa.
The officer picked it up and returned it to him. <<Be careful, because coins do not grow on trees>>, he told him with a smile.
El pequeño grupo de curiosos se rio, pero no exactamente de la magia.
The small group of onlookers laughed, but not exactly at the magic.
Para el gran final, Fernando anunció que haría levitar su sombrero.
For the grand finale, Fernando announced that he would levitate his hat.
Sopló encima del sombrero, agitó las manos y dijo palabras mágicas.
He blew over the hat, waved his hands and said magic words.
Por supuesto, el sombrero no se movió.
Of course, the hat did not move.
Entonces una ráfaga de viento lo levantó por los aires y lo tiró a la fuente.
Then a gust of wind lifted it into the air and threw it into the fountain.
El público aplaudió con entusiasmo. <<Eso ha sido increíble>>, gritó un niño.
The audience applauded with enthusiasm. <<That was incredible>>, shouted a child.
Fernando hizo una reverencia, empapado hasta los codos después de rescatar el sombrero.
Fernando took a bow, soaked up to his elbows after rescuing the hat.
Al recoger sus cosas, Fernando encontró un billete de cinco euros en su maleta.
While packing up his things, Fernando found a five-euro note in his suitcase.
Miró alrededor, pero no vio quién lo había dejado.
He looked around, but he did not see who had left it.
Quizá alguien hubiera disfrutado del espectáculo.
Perhaps someone had enjoyed the show.
O quizá se hubiera compadecido de él.
Or perhaps they had taken pity on him.
De cualquier manera, eran cinco euros más de los que tenía antes.
Either way, it was five euros more than he had had before.
Fernando volvió a casa sonriendo.
Fernando went home smiling.
Pelusa lo esperaba en la puerta, como siempre. <<Pelusa, hoy he ganado cinco euros y un aplauso>>, le dijo mientras le daba de comer.
Pelusa was waiting for him at the door, as always. <<Pelusa, today I earned five euros and a round of applause>>, he told him while feeding him.
El gato bostezó. <<Tienes razón>>, contestó Fernando. <<La semana que viene necesitaré mejores trucos>>.
The cat yawned. <<You are right>>, replied Fernando. <<Next week I will need better tricks>>.
Pero ambos sabían que volvería a la plaza el sábado siguiente con exactamente el mismo calcetín.
But they both knew that he would return to the square the following Saturday with exactly the same sock.
