Elena trabajaba en una pequeña librería en el centro de Salamanca.
Elena worked in a small bookshop in the centre of Salamanca.
Todas las mañanas, antes de abrir la tienda, cruzaba la Plaza Mayor y se sentaba en un banco junto a la fuente.
Every morning, before opening the shop, she would cross the Plaza Mayor and sit on a bench next to the fountain.
Desde allí podía ver el reloj de la torre del Ayuntamiento, que marcaba las ocho en punto.
From there she could see the clock on the Town Hall tower, which showed exactly eight o'clock.
Aquel momento de tranquilidad era su favorito del día.
That moment of calm was her favourite part of the day.
Una mañana de primavera, un hombre se sentó en el mismo banco.
One spring morning, a man sat down on the same bench.
Llevaba un cuaderno de dibujo y empezó a trazar las líneas de la fachada con un lápiz fino.
He was carrying a sketchbook and began to trace the lines of the facade with a fine pencil.
Elena lo observó de reojo durante varios minutos.
Elena watched him out of the corner of her eye for several minutes.
En un momento dado, él levantó la vista y sus miradas se cruzaron. <<Perdone, espero que no le moleste que me siente aquí>>, dijo él con una sonrisa amable.
At a certain moment, he looked up and their eyes met. <<Sorry, I hope you don't mind me sitting here>>, he said with a kind smile.
<<En absoluto>>, respondió Elena. <<De hecho, llevo años viniendo aquí y nunca había visto a nadie dibujar esta plaza>>.
<<Not at all>>, Elena replied. <<In fact, I have been coming here for years and I had never seen anyone draw this square>>.
Él se presentó como Daniel, un arquitecto de Valencia que acababa de mudarse a Salamanca. <<Es que esta ciudad tiene una luz especial>>, explicó mientras señalaba los edificios de piedra dorada. <<Quería capturar eso en mis dibujos>>.
He introduced himself as Daniel, an architect from Valencia who had just moved to Salamanca. <<It's just that this city has a special light>>, he explained while pointing at the golden stone buildings. <<I wanted to capture that in my drawings>>.
A partir de entonces, Daniel aparecía cada mañana en la plaza.
From then on, Daniel appeared every morning in the square.
Al principio solo se saludaban, pero poco a poco empezaron a hablar de todo: de libros, de viajes, de sus sueños.
At first they only greeted each other, but little by little they began to talk about everything: about books, about travels, about their dreams.

Por su parte, Daniel admiraba la manera en que Elena hablaba de los libros, como si cada historia fuera un mundo entero por descubrir.
For his part, Daniel admired the way Elena talked about books, as if every story were an entire world to discover.
Un día, Daniel le regaló uno de sus dibujos.
One day, Daniel gave her one of his drawings.

She looked at the drawing once more and then she looked at him. <<Something similar happens to me too>>, she said in a low voice. <<Since you started coming to this square, the mornings are different>>.
Daniel sonrió y, sin decir nada más, le tomó la mano.
Daniel smiled and, without saying anything else, he took her hand.
El reloj de la torre marcó las nueve, pero ninguno de los dos lo oyó.
The tower clock struck nine, but neither of them heard it.
