Si alguien le hubiera dicho a Marta que volvería a encontrarse con Alejandro después de tantos años, habría respondido que eso era imposible.
If someone had told Marta that she would meet Alejandro again after so many years, she would have replied that it was impossible.
Habían terminado su relación en Salamanca una tarde de junio, cuando él le confesó que se marcharía a Buenos Aires para trabajar en el consulado.
They had ended their relationship in Salamanca one June afternoon, when he confessed to her that he would be leaving for Buenos Aires to work at the consulate.

Marta felt her heart quicken, although she tried to hide it. <<They told me you had moved to Seville,>> Alejandro added, <<but I would never have dared to look for you.>> She pointed to the empty chair opposite her and he sat down without saying anything more.

They talked for hours while the storm raged outside.

Alejandro stopped beneath an orange tree and looked at her with an expression that she remembered perfectly. <<I wish I hadn't left,>> he murmured. <<I've thought about you every day since I went away.>> Marta did not respond immediately.
Se había prometido a sí misma que no volvería a sufrir por él, pero las palabras que él acababa de pronunciar habían derribado todas las murallas que había construido.
She had promised herself that she would not suffer because of him again, but the words that he had just spoken had torn down all the walls she had built.
<<No sé si es posible que empecemos de nuevo>>, confesó ella al fin, con la voz temblorosa. <<Pero me gustaría que lo intentásemos.>> Alejandro asintió despacio y le tendió la mano.
<<I don't know if it's possible for us to start again,>> she confessed at last, her voice trembling. <<But I'd like us to try.>> Alejandro nodded slowly and held out his hand to her.
Marta la aceptó, y mientras caminaban bajo los últimos hilos de lluvia, pensó que a veces la vida devolvía lo que antes había arrebatado.
Marta accepted it, and as they walked beneath the last threads of rain, she thought that sometimes life gave back what it had previously snatched away.
No sabía si aquello duraría, pero por primera vez en muchos años sintió que el futuro no era algo que debiera ser temido.
She did not know if it would last, but for the first time in many years she felt that the future was not something that should be feared.
