Durante quince años, Esperanza Molina había reservado la misma mesa en el Bar Lucero de Salamanca todos los viernes por la noche.
For fifteen years, Esperanza Molina had reserved the same table at Bar Lucero in Salamanca every Friday evening.
Era la mesa del rincón, junto a la ventana que daba al río Tormes, y desde allí había visto pasar la vida entera de aquel barrio.
It was the corner table, next to the window that overlooked the River Tormes, and from there she had watched the entire life of that neighbourhood pass by.
Los camareros, que la conocían de sobra, le preparaban el café con leche antes de que ella llegara, y fue precisamente esa costumbre la que le reveló que algo había cambiado para siempre.
The waiters, who knew her only too well, prepared her coffee with milk before she arrived, and it was precisely that habit which revealed to her that something had changed forever.
Aquel viernes, al empujar la puerta del bar, Esperanza notó que su mesa estaba ocupada por un hombre mayor con barba blanca que leía el periódico.
That Friday, upon pushing open the bar door, Esperanza noticed that her table was occupied by an older man with a white beard who was reading the newspaper.
El camarero, Rubén, se acercó con expresión incómoda. <<Señora Molina, lamento decirle que el nuevo dueño ha decidido que las mesas ya no pueden ser reservadas>>, explicó en voz baja, como si estuviera confesando un pecado. <<Se le ha comunicado a todos los clientes habituales.>>
The waiter, Rubén, approached with an uncomfortable expression. <<Señora Molina, I am sorry to tell you that the new owner has decided that tables can no longer be reserved,>> he explained in a low voice, as if he were confessing a sin. <<All the regular customers have been informed.>>
Esperanza sintió que el suelo se hundía bajo sus pies.
Esperanza felt the ground sink beneath her feet.
Si le hubieran dicho años atrás que perder una mesa en un bar la afectaría tanto, se habría reído.
If she had been told years ago that losing a table in a bar would affect her so much, she would have laughed.
Pero aquella mesa representaba mucho más que un lugar donde sentarse.
But that table represented far more than a place to sit down.
En ella había corregido los exámenes de sus alumnos durante décadas, había llorado la muerte de su marido, había celebrado el nacimiento de su primera nieta y había escrito las cartas que nunca se atrevió a enviar.
At it she had marked her students' exams for decades, had mourned the death of her husband, had celebrated the birth of her first granddaughter and had written the letters she never dared to send.
Se sentó en la única mesa libre, cerca de la barra, y pidió su café habitual.
She sat down at the only free table, near the bar, and ordered her usual coffee.

From that position neither the river nor the light of the street lamps reflected in the water could be seen.

Rubén le sirvió el café y le susurró que él también opinaba que la decisión era injusta, pero que no podía hacer nada al respecto porque le habían advertido que sería despedido si cuestionaba las nuevas normas.
Rubén served her the coffee and whispered to her that he too felt the decision was unfair, but that he could not do anything about it because he had been warned that he would be fired if he questioned the new rules.
Esperanza asintió en silencio y bebió su café despacio, observando al hombre de la barba blanca que ahora ocupaba su rincón.
Esperanza nodded in silence and drank her coffee slowly, watching the man with the white beard who now occupied her corner.
Para su sorpresa, él levantó la vista del periódico y le sonrió. <<Disculpe>>, dijo. <<¿Es usted la profesora Molina?
To her surprise, he looked up from the newspaper and smiled at her. <<Excuse me,>> he said. <<Are you Professor Molina?
Mi hija fue alumna suya hace veinte años y siempre decía que usted le había enseñado a pensar por sí misma.
My daughter was a student of yours twenty years ago and she always said that you had taught her to think for herself.

Esperanza no supo qué responder.
Esperanza did not know what to reply.

Her lips trembled and she had to look away for a moment.

The October air smelled of wet leaves and ancient stone.
Pensó que tal vez las mesas no importaban tanto como las personas que se sentaban en ellas, y que los lugares que verdaderamente nos pertenecen no son los que reservamos, sino los que nos recuerdan quiénes fuimos y en quiénes nos convertimos.
She thought that perhaps tables did not matter as much as the people who sat at them, and that the places that truly belong to us are not the ones we reserve, but the ones that remind us who we were and who we became.
