Si alguien le hubiera dicho a Marcos Peña que su cuñado Ernesto arruinaría la boda más esperada de Salamanca, no se lo habría creído.
If someone had told Marcos Peña that his brother-in-law Ernesto would ruin the most anticipated wedding in Salamanca, he would not have believed it.

But when the waiter served him his fourth glass of wine, Ernesto jumped up, grabbed the DJ's microphone and exclaimed: <<Dear family, before someone stops me, I have to share a few words.>> Marcos tried to intervene, but Beatriz held him by the arm. <<Leave him,>> she whispered. <<If you stop him now, he'll make an even worse scene.>>

But the worst was yet to come.

Ernesto took out his phone and announced that he had prepared a slideshow.
Antes de que nadie pudiera reaccionar, la pantalla del proyector mostró una foto de Carmen a los doce años con aparato dental y un corte de pelo que parecía haber sido hecho por alguien con los ojos vendados.
Before anyone could react, the projector screen displayed a photo of Carmen at twelve years old with braces and a haircut that looked like it had been done by someone blindfolded.

The entire room held its breath.

With a surprising agility for her eighty-three years, she stood up, walked over to Ernesto and snatched the microphone from his hands. <<My dear boy,>> she said with a charming smile, <<I've been informed that the cake is ready.
¿Por qué no vas a servirlo?>> Ernesto, que jamás habría contradicho a la matriarca de la familia, obedeció sin rechistar.
Why don't you go and serve it?>> Ernesto, who would never have contradicted the family matriarch, obeyed without a word of protest.
Años después, cada vez que se reunía la familia, alguien mencionaba el discurso de Ernesto y todos se echaban a reír, incluida Carmen, que terminó admitiendo que había sido lo más memorable de toda la boda.
Years later, every time the family gathered, someone would mention Ernesto's speech and everyone would burst out laughing, including Carmen, who ended up admitting that it had been the most memorable thing about the entire wedding.
