(The Attic Key)
Carmen Ruiz llevaba tres meses viviendo en su nueva casa de Toledo.
Carmen Ruiz had been living in her new house in Toledo for three months.
Era un edificio antiguo con paredes gruesas y techos altos.
It was an old building with thick walls and high ceilings.

Carmen opened it carefully.

The yellowish pages contained detailed drawings of the house and handwritten notes in blue ink.

On the last page, someone had written: If you find this notebook, look under the red tile in the garden.
Carmen bajó corriendo al jardín.
Carmen ran down to the garden.
Tardó casi una hora en encontrar la baldosa correcta.
It took her almost an hour to find the right tile.
Cuando por fin la levantó, descubrió una caja metálica enterrada en la tierra.
When she finally lifted it, she discovered a metal box buried in the ground.
Dentro había cartas antiguas, un reloj de bolsillo de oro y una fotografía de una familia que posaba delante de la misma casa.
Inside there were old letters, a gold pocket watch, and a photograph of a family posing in front of the same house.
Carmen dio la vuelta a la fotografía.
Carmen turned the photograph over.

That night, Carmen decided that she would find out everything possible about the Delgados.
