La Fiesta del Pueblo
(The Village Festival)
Miguel no había vuelto al pueblo de su abuela en veinte años.
Miguel hadn’t been back to his grandmother’s village in twenty years.
Cuando era niño, pasaba todos los veranos allí, en un pequeño pueblo de Asturias entre montañas verdes.
When he was a child, he spent every summer there, in a small village in Asturias between green mountains.
Este año, decidió volver para la fiesta del pueblo.
This year, he decided to go back for the village festival.
Llegó por la tarde y aparcó el coche junto a la iglesia.
He arrived in the afternoon and parked the car next to the church.
Todo era exactamente igual.
Everything was exactly the same.
La misma plaza, el mismo bar, las mismas flores en los balcones.
The same square, the same bar, the same flowers on the balconies.
Una señora mayor lo miró desde la puerta de su casa.
An older lady looked at him from the door of her house.

It was Doña Carmen, his grandmother’s neighbour.

You’ve grown so much! she said with an enormous smile.
Por la noche, la fiesta empezó en la plaza.
In the evening, the festival started in the square.
Había música de gaita, sidra para todos y una hoguera grande en el centro.
There was bagpipe music, cider for everyone and a big bonfire in the centre.
Miguel habló con gente que no veía desde la infancia.
Miguel talked to people he hadn’t seen since childhood.
A las dos de la mañana, Miguel se sentó en un banco y miró las estrellas.
At two in the morning, Miguel sat on a bench and looked at the stars.
El pueblo no había cambiado nada.
The village hadn’t changed at all.
Y eso, pensó, era exactamente lo que necesitaba.
And that, he thought, was exactly what he needed.
