El Malentendido
(The Misunderstanding)
Tom era inglés y llevaba seis meses en Madrid.
Tom was English and had been in Madrid for six months.
Su español era bastante bueno, o eso pensaba él.
His Spanish was quite good, or so he thought.
Un viernes por la noche, fue a cenar a un restaurante cerca de su piso.
One Friday evening, he went to have dinner at a restaurant near his flat.
El camarero le dio la carta.
The waiter gave him the menu.
Tom quería pollo, así que pidió pollo a la plancha.
Tom wanted chicken, so he ordered grilled chicken.
Pero estaba nervioso y dijo pulpo a la gallega.
But he was nervous and said Galician-style octopus.
El camarero asintió y se fue.
The waiter nodded and left.
Diez minutos después, el camarero volvió con un plato enorme de pulpo.
Ten minutes later, the waiter came back with an enormous plate of octopus.
Tom lo miró, sorprendido.
Tom looked at it, surprised.
Yo no pedí esto..., pensó.
I didn’t order this... he thought.
Pero no quería parecer tonto, así que no dijo nada.
But he didn’t want to look foolish, so he said nothing.
Probó el pulpo.
He tried the octopus.
Estaba buenísimo.
It was delicious.
El pimentón, el aceite de oliva, la patata blanda... Tom cerró los ojos y sonrió.
The paprika, the olive oil, the soft potato... Tom closed his eyes and smiled.
Nunca había comido algo tan bueno.
He had never eaten anything so good.
Cuando pagó la cuenta, el camarero le preguntó: ¿Le gustó el pulpo?
When he paid the bill, the waiter asked him: Did you like the octopus?
Tom sonrió.
Tom smiled.
Sí.
Yes.
Ha sido el mejor error de mi vida.
It’s been the best mistake of my life.
El camarero no entendió, pero sonrió también.
The waiter didn’t understand, but he smiled too.
