The Bridge of Sighs
Elena would never have imagined that a book abandoned on a bench in the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca would change her life forever.
That October morning had been marked by a fine rain that covered the golden stones of the city with a special glow.
She had sat down under the arcades to read when she discovered, next to her bag, a novel with a handwritten dedication: <<For whoever finds these pages: love is the only adventure worth having.>>
Inside the book she found a card with a name: Daniel Vega, and the phone number of a bookshop in the old quarter.
Elena sent him a message explaining that she had found his book.
He replied that he was very glad and told her that he hoped they could meet so she could return it in person.
She accepted, although a friend warned her to be careful with strangers.
They arranged to meet the next day at the entrance to the University, beneath the famous stone frog.
Daniel turned out to be a literature professor who had recently been transferred from Madrid.
He explained to her that the book had belonged to his grandmother and that he had left it on the bench by accident while he was talking on the phone. <<If I had lost it forever, I would never have forgiven myself,>> he confessed with a shy smile.
Elena noticed that his dark eyes shone with a warmth that immediately made her feel at ease.
The weeks went by and what had started as a casual encounter turned into something much deeper.
They would stroll through the cobbled streets beside the River Tormes and sit on the Roman Bridge to watch the sunset.
Daniel told her that he would never have moved to Salamanca if he had known he would find something like this. <<I would have come much sooner,>> he added, and Elena felt her heart racing.
However, one afternoon Daniel confessed to her that there was something he had not told her.
He explained that he had been engaged in Madrid and that his fiancee had left him just one month before the wedding.
He said that was why he had left: he needed to start over. <<If I hadn't left Madrid, I probably would have kept destroying myself,>> he admitted with a broken voice.
Elena remained silent for a long moment before responding.
<<We all carry wounds,>> she told him finally. <<What matters is not what has happened to us, but what we do with it.
If you had stayed in Madrid, we would never have met.>> Daniel looked at her as if he could not believe what he had just heard.
In that instant, she was kissed for the first time beneath the orange light of the Salamancan sunset, and she knew that something beautiful had just been born between the two of them.
Months later, while they walked together across the same bridge where they had kissed, Elena asked him if he ever regretted having left Madrid.
Daniel stopped, took her by the hands and replied that if someone had asked him a year earlier where his future would be, he would never have said Salamanca. <<But now I know that fate brought me here for a reason,>> he whispered to her. <<And that reason is you.>> Elena smiled because, for the first time in a long while, she felt that the pieces of her life fitted together perfectly.
