(The Chef Who Could Not Cook)
Ignacio Ruiz había conseguido trabajó como chef en un restaurante nuevo de Sevilla.
Ignacio Ruiz had got a job as a chef in a new restaurant in Seville.
El problema era que no sabía cocinar.
The problem was that he did not know how to cook.
Había mentido en la entrevista porque necesitaba el dinero y, además, el dueño del restaurante era su cuñado. <<No te preocupes>>, le había dicho su mujer. <<Seguro que puedes aprender rápido>>.
He had lied in the interview because he needed the money and, besides, the restaurant owner was his brother-in-law. <<Don't worry>>, his wife had told him. <<I'm sure you can learn quickly>>.
El primer día fue un desastre.
The first day was a disaster.
Un cliente pidió una tortilla española y, en vez de hacerla con patatas, Ignacio la preparó con plátanos.
A customer ordered a Spanish omelette and, instead of making it with potatoes, Ignacio prepared it with bananas.
Cuando el camarero la llevó a la mesa, el cliente se quedó mirando el plato en silencio. <<Disculpe>>, dijo finalmente, <<¿esto es una tortilla o un postre?>>.
When the waiter brought it to the table, the customer stared at the plate in silence. <<Excuse me>>, he said finally, <<is this an omelette or a dessert?>>.
A lo largo de la semana, las cosas empeoraron.
Throughout the week, things got worse.

He burned the rice three times, mixed up salt and sugar in a soup and tried to fry a salad.

The waiters began to be afraid of going into the kitchen.

However, the most surprising thing was that no customer complained.

Ignacio sonrió, aunque por dentro seguía sin entender qué había pasado.
Ignacio smiled, although deep down he still did not understand what had happened.
Aquella noche, mientras intentaba hacer una paella con chocolate, pensó que quizás la vida era así: a veces, los mayores éxitos nacen de los errores más grandes.
That night, while he was trying to make a paella with chocolate, he thought that perhaps life was like that: sometimes, the greatest successes are born from the biggest mistakes.
O tal vez los sevillanos simplemente tenían muy buen sentido del humor.
