Los Sobres de Lavapiés
(The Lavapiés Envelopes)
Durante tres semanas, alguien había dejado sobres debajo de la puerta de la librería de Marcos en el barrio de Lavapiés, en Madrid.
For three weeks, someone had been leaving envelopes under the door of Marcos's bookshop in the Lavapiés neighbourhood of Madrid.
Los sobres no tenían remitente.
The envelopes had no sender.
Dentro de cada uno había una fotografía antigua en blanco y negro de un lugar de la ciudad que Marcos no reconocía.
Inside each one was an old black and white photograph of a place in the city that Marcos did not recognise.
Sin embargo, en el reverso de cada foto había una fecha escrita a mano y una sola palabra: <<Recuerda>>.
However, on the back of each photo there was a handwritten date and a single word: <<Remember>>.
Al principio, Marcos pensó que se trataba de una broma.
At first, Marcos thought it was a joke.
No obstante, las fotos seguían llegando.
However, the photos kept arriving.
Un día, decidió quedarse hasta tarde en la librería para intentar ver quién las dejaba.
One day, he decided to stay late at the bookshop to try to see who was leaving them.
Apagó las luces y esperó detrás del mostrador con un café en la mano.
He turned off the lights and waited behind the counter with a coffee in his hand.
A las once de la noche, escuchó unos pasos lentos que se acercaban a la puerta.
At eleven at night, he heard slow footsteps approaching the door.
Marcos contuvo la respiración.
Marcos held his breath.
Vio cómo un sobre blanco aparecía por debajo de la puerta.
He watched as a white envelope appeared under the door.
Sin pensarlo dos veces, abrió la puerta de golpe.
Without thinking twice, he flung the door open.
Allí, bajo la luz amarillenta de la farola, había una mujer mayor con un abrigo gris.
There, under the yellowish light of the street lamp, stood an older woman in a grey coat.
Parecía asustada. <<Espere, por favor>>, dijo Marcos. <<¿Quién es usted?
She looked frightened. <<Wait, please>>, said Marcos. <<Who are you?
¿Por qué me envía estas fotos?>>.
Why are you sending me these photos?>>.
La mujer lo miró con los ojos llenos de lágrimas. <<Me llamó Carmen>>, respondió con voz temblorosa. <<Este lugar era la zapatería de mi padre.
The woman looked at him with eyes full of tears. <<My name is Carmen>>, she replied in a trembling voice. <<This place was my father's shoe shop.
Él falleció hace un año y quería que alguien supiera que esta tienda tuvo otra vida antes de ser una librería.
He passed away a year ago and I wanted someone to know that this shop had another life before being a bookshop.
Las fotos son de los años sesenta, cuando todo el barrio venía aquí a comprar zapatos>>.
The photos are from the sixties, when the whole neighbourhood came here to buy shoes>>.
Marcos se quedó en silencio un momento.
Marcos stood in silence for a moment.
Luego, sonrió y la invitó a pasar.
Then, he smiled and invited her in.
Le preparó un té y Carmen le contó más historias sobre el barrio.
He made her a tea and Carmen told him more stories about the neighbourhood.
Le habló de las fiestas del verano, del panadero que cantaba por las mañanas y de los niños que jugaban en la plaza hasta que oscurecía.
She told him about the summer festivals, the baker who sang in the mornings and the children who played in the square until it got dark.
Antes de marcharse, Carmen le dio la última foto: el padre de ella, joven y sonriente, de pie delante de la tienda.
Before leaving, Carmen gave him the last photo: her father, young and smiling, standing in front of the shop.
Al día siguiente, Marcos enmarcó aquella foto y la colgó junto a la entrada de la librería.
The next day, Marcos framed that photo and hung it by the entrance of the bookshop.
Debajo puso un pequeño cartel que decía: <<Zapatería Ruiz, 1962>>.
Underneath he placed a small sign that read: <<Zapatería Ruiz, 1962>>.
No quería que nadie olvidara que los lugares también tienen memoria.
He did not want anyone to forget that places also have memories.
A partir de entonces, Carmen pasaba por la librería cada viernes y, poco a poco, se convirtió en la mejor clienta y la mejor amiga que Marcos había tenido.
From then on, Carmen stopped by the bookshop every Friday and, little by little, she became the best customer and the best friend Marcos had ever had.
