Sergio era el cartero más lento de toda Cantabria.
Sergio was the slowest postman in all of Cantabria.
No era porque no quisiera trabajar, sino porque hablaba con todo el mundo.

Cada carta era una excusa para llamar al timbre y preguntar cómo estaba la familia.

One day, Sergio received a package for doña Amparo, a ninety-year-old lady who lived alone in a large house at the end of the main street.
Cuando llegó a su puerta, eran ya las tres de la tarde. <<Sergio, llegas tarde otra vez>>, dijo doña Amparo. <<Sí, pero le traigo noticias frescas>>, contestó él mientras entraba.
When he arrived at her door, it was already three in the afternoon. <<Sergio, you are late again>>, said doña Amparo. <<Yes, but I bring you fresh news>>, he replied as he came in.
Se sentó en la cocina y se tomó un café con galletas mientras le contaba todo lo que había oído esa mañana: que el panadero iba a jubilarse, que la farmacéutica había adoptado un perro enorme y que el alcalde se había quedado dormido en la misa del domingo.
He sat down in the kitchen and had a coffee with biscuits while he told her everything he had heard that morning: that the baker was going to retire, that the pharmacist had adopted an enormous dog and that the mayor had fallen asleep at Sunday mass.
Doña Amparo se reía tanto que le salían lágrimas.
Doña Amparo laughed so much that tears streamed down her face.
Aquella tarde, el jefe de Sergio le llamó por teléfono. <<Sergio, he recibido una queja>>, dijo.
That afternoon, Sergio's boss called him on the phone. <<Sergio, I have received a complaint>>, he said.
Sergio se asustó. <<¿Una queja?>> <<Sí.
Sergio was startled. <<A complaint?>> <<Yes.
Doña Amparo ha llamado para decir que su cartero es una maravilla y que si lo cambias, ella personalmente vendrá a la oficina a protestar>>.
Doña Amparo has called to say that her postman is wonderful and that if you replace him, she will personally come to the office to protest>>.
Sergio sonrió.
Sergio smiled.
Al final, las mejores entregas no caben en un sobre.
In the end, the best deliveries do not fit in an envelope.
