The Watchmaker's Last Hour
Detective Marta Navarro arrived at the watchmaker's shop of Aurelio Campos on a Monday morning.
The old watchmaker had been found dead in his workshop the night before.
The strange thing was that every clock in the shop had stopped at three fifteen in the morning.
Ni uno más, ni uno menos.
Not one more, not one less.
A Marta le pareció una coincidencia imposible.
To Marta it seemed like an impossible coincidence.
Inside the workshop, she found tools arranged with precision and a notebook on the workbench.
On the last page, Aurelio had written: <<I told the truth to someone who did not want to hear it.
Ahora me arrepiento>>.
Now I regret it>>.
Marta leyó la frase varias veces.
Marta read the sentence several times.
Por un lado, sonaba como una confesion.
On the one hand, it sounded like a confession.
Por otro lado, podía ser una acusacion.
On the other hand, it could be an accusation.
Furthermore, there was a crossed-out name below the sentence, but it could still be read: Pablo Serrano.
Marta localizo a Pablo Serrano esa misma tarde.
Marta located Pablo Serrano that same afternoon.
He was a young man of about thirty who had been Aurelio's apprentice for five years.
When Marta asked him about the note, Pablo turned pale. <<I do not know what you are talking about>>, he replied without looking her in the eyes.
Sin embargo, sus manos temblaban.
However, his hands were trembling.
Marta insisted: <<Mr Campos wrote something to you before he died.
Necesitó que me diga que significaba>>.
I need you to tell me what it meant>>.
Pablo sat down and rubbed his face with his hands.
In the end, he spoke. <<Aurelio discovered that I had been selling fake parts to his customers.
Me dijo que iba a denunciarme.
He told me he was going to report me.
That night I went to the shop to ask him not to do it.
Discutimos.
We argued.
Pero no le hice nada.
But I did not do anything to him.
Cuando me fui, estaba vivo>>.
When I left, he was alive>>.
Marta stared at him. <<Then, why did all the clocks stop?>>.
Back at the watchmaker's shop, Marta examined the clocks carefully.
Inside an antique cuckoo clock, she found a small electronic device connected to a timer.
Someone had programmed it to cut the electricity at three fifteen.
Marta se dio cuenta de todo.
Marta realised everything.
Aurelio sabía que iba a morir.
Aurelio knew he was going to die.
He had prepared the scene so that the clocks would mark the exact time.
No fue un misterio.
It was not a mystery.
Fue su ultima declaracion.
It was his final statement.
