El Día de la Mudanza
(The Moving Day)
Fernando Ruiz se había mudado cinco veces en tres años.
Fernando Ruiz had moved five times in three years.
No porque le gustara cambiar de piso, sino porque siempre tenía problemas con los vecinos.
Not because he liked changing flats, but because he always had problems with the neighbours.
En su último edificio, la señora del segundo piso se quejaba de que Fernando ponia la música demasiado alta.
In his last building, the lady on the second floor complained that Fernando played music too loudly.
En realidad, Fernando ni siquiera tenía altavoces.
In reality, Fernando did not even have speakers.
El ruido venía de sus zapatillas arrastrarse por el suelo.
The noise came from his slippers dragging on the floor.
Así que Fernando decidió mudarse otra vez.
So Fernando decided to move again.
Le pidió ayuda a su mejor amigo, Gonzalo, que tenía una furgoneta vieja.

Gonzalo arrived at eight in the morning with a sleepy face and a coffee in his hand. I do not understand why you do not hire a removal company, he said while looking at the boxes. Because removal companies cost money, Fernando answered, and you only cost me a coffee.
La mudanza empezó mal.
The move started badly.
Gonzalo intentó bajar el sofa por la escalera, pero el sofa era más ancho que la puerta.

Después de media hora de empujar y tirar, decidieron sacarlo por la ventana.

En ese momento, la señora del segundo abrió su ventana y el sofa le golpeo la maceta de geranios.

La maceta cayó al suelo y se rompio en pedazos. <<Ya veo por que se muda usted tan a menudo>>, le grito la señora.
The pot fell to the ground and broke into pieces. Now I see why you move so often, the lady shouted at him.
Por fin consiguieron meter todo en la furgoneta.
They finally managed to fit everything into the van.
Sin embargo, cuando llegaron al nuevo piso, Gonzalo aparco en doble fila y un policía se acercó. <<No pueden quedarse aquí>>, les dijo.
However, when they arrived at the new flat, Gonzalo double-parked and a police officer approached. You cannot stay here, he told them.
Fernando le explicó que estaban en plena mudanza.
Fernando explained to him that they were in the middle of a move.
El policía miró la furgoneta, que parecía a punto de explotar con tantas cajas, y les dio diez minutos.
The officer looked at the van, which seemed about to explode with so many boxes, and gave them ten minutes.
Tardaron cuarenta y cinco.
It took them forty-five.
Al final del día, Fernando se dejó caer en el sofa, que ahora tenía una mancha de tierra de los geranios.
