The Neighbours' Garden
Marta Delgado moved to a small flat in the Gracia neighbourhood, in Barcelona, after separating from her husband.
The flat had neither a balcony nor a terrace, but it did have a window that looked out onto an inner courtyard.
At first, the courtyard seemed sad and abandoned to her.
However, one Saturday morning, she leaned out of the window and saw that her downstairs neighbour, an older man called Ramon, was planting flowers in some pots.
Marta le saludo desde arriba. <<Buenos dias.
Marta greeted him from above. Good morning.
<<Geranios y lavanda.
What are you planting? Ramon looked up and smiled at her. Geraniums and lavender.
If you like, I will give you some seeds so that you can plant something too.
A Marta le pareció una idea estupenda.
Marta thought it was a wonderful idea.
She had never had plants, but that day she decided she was going to try.
Ramon explained to her how to prepare the soil and when to water them.
Furthermore, he lent her some old pots that he had stored in his storeroom.
Over the course of the weeks, the courtyard was completely transformed.
Marta realised that looking after the plants helped her feel better.
Every afternoon, when she came back from work, she went to the window to check how her geraniums were doing.
In fact, sometimes she stayed talking to Ramon for hours.
He told her stories about his late wife, who had also been a great lover of flowers.
In return, Marta brought him cakes that she prepared at weekends.
A year later, the courtyard had become a small garden full of colour.
Other neighbours also plucked up the courage to put plants in their windows.
In the afternoons, music and conversations could be heard rising from the courtyard.
Ramon said to Marta one day: Do you know what the best thing about all this is?
Before, this courtyard was as empty as my life.
Now we both have something beautiful to look after.
Marta smiled at him and said nothing, because deep down she knew that Ramon was not only referring to the plants.
