(The Tapas Contest)
El pueblo de Villatorta celebraba cada año su concurso de tapas.
The town of Villatorta held its tapas contest every year.
Todo el mundo sabía que Paco, el dueño del bar La Cucharita, ganaría otra vez.
Everyone knew that Paco, the owner of the bar La Cucharita, would win again.
Llevaba siete años ganando con su tortilla de patatas.

Pero entonces llegó el plato de la Cocinera Misteriosa: unas croquetas de jamón ibérico con miel y romero.
But then the Mysterious Cook's dish arrived: some Iberian ham croquettes with honey and rosemary.
El primer juez se quedó en silencio.

The argument became so heated that a judge knocked a glass of red wine over the white tablecloth.
Paco miraba la escena con la boca abierta.
Paco watched the scene with his mouth open.

Decidieron declarar un empate.
They decided to declare a tie.
Pero antes de anunciar el resultado, Paco se acercó a la Cocinera Misteriosa y le dijo: Señora, sus croquetas son extraordinarias.
But before announcing the result, Paco approached the Mysterious Cook and said to her: 'Madam, your croquettes are extraordinary.
¿Dónde aprendió a cocinar así?. La mujer se quitó el sombrero y las gafas lentamente.
Where did you learn to cook like that?' The woman took off her hat and glasses slowly.
Paco se quedó pálido. ¡Mamá!, gritó. ¿Qué haces aquí?. Toda la plaza estalló en carcajadas.
Paco went pale. 'Mum!' he shouted. 'What are you doing here?' The whole square burst out laughing.
La madre de Paco, doña Carmen, estaba cansada de que su hijo presumiera tanto de su cocina. Alguien tenía que enseñarte humildad, le dijo mientras le pellizcaba la mejilla.
Paco's mother, Dona Carmen, was tired of her son boasting so much about his cooking. 'Someone had to teach you humility,' she told him while she pinched his cheek.
Al final compartieron el premio y el pueblo celebró con la mejor fiesta que se recordaba en años.
In the end they shared the prize and the town celebrated with the best party anyone could remember in years.
Desde aquel día, Paco siempre decía: Cocino bien, pero mi madre cocina mejor.
From that day on, Paco always said: 'I cook well, but my mother cooks better.'
