La Mudanza
(The Move)
Marta llegó a Zaragoza un lunes de octubre.
Marta arrived in Zaragoza on a Monday in October.
Llevaba dos maletas pesadas y una caja grande de libros.
She was carrying two heavy suitcases and a big box of books.
Su nuevo piso estaba en el cuarto piso de un edificio antiguo, sin ascensor.
Her new flat was on the fourth floor of an old building, with no lift.
Subió las escaleras tres veces.
She went up the stairs three times.
La primera semana fue difícil.
The first week was hard.
No conocía a nadie en la ciudad.
She did not know anyone in the city.
Comía sola en su cocina pequeña y echaba de menos a su familia y a sus amigos de siempre.
She ate alone in her small kitchen and she missed her family and her lifelong friends.
Por las noches, escuchaba los ruidos de los vecinos y la ciudad le parecía enorme y extraña.
At night, she listened to the sounds of the neighbours and the city seemed enormous and strange to her.
El segundo lunes, salió a caminar sin rumbo por el centro.
The second Monday, she went out walking aimlessly through the centre.
Encontró una cafetería pequeña en una calle tranquila cerca del río.
She found a small cafe on a quiet street near the river.
Se llamaba El Rincón.
It was called El Rincon.
Tenía mesas de madera y olía a café recién hecho.
It had wooden tables and it smelled of freshly made coffee.
Entró y pidió un café con leche.
She went in and ordered a white coffee.
La camarera era simpática.
The waitress was friendly.
Le preguntó: ¿Eres nueva en el barrio?
She asked her: Are you new in the neighbourhood?
Marta dijo que sí, que acababa de mudarse.
Marta said yes, that she had just moved.
Pues bienvenida, dijo la camarera con una sonrisa grande.
Well, welcome, the waitress said with a big smile.
Aquí siempre hay sitio para una más.
There is always room for one more here.
Marta volvió al día siguiente, y al otro.
Marta came back the next day, and the day after.
Pronto conoció a los vecinos que también desayunaban allí cada mañana.
Soon she got to know the neighbours who also had breakfast there every morning.
Un mes después, ya tenía su mesa favorita junto a la ventana.
A month later, she already had her favourite table by the window.
Zaragoza empezó a sentirse como casa.
Zaragoza started to feel like home.
