(The Room at the Back)
Cuando Sofía heredó la casa de su abuela en un pueblo abandonado de Teruel, todos le dijeron que no fuera.
When Sofía inherited her grandmother's house in an abandoned village in Teruel, everyone told her not to go.
Su madre le advirtió que la casa llevaba treinta años cerrada y que nadie del pueblo había querido comprarla. <<Si tu abuela hubiera deseado que alguien viviera allí, no habría dejado que se pudriera durante décadas>>, le dijo con una voz que temblaba ligeramente.
Her mother warned her that the house had been closed for thirty years and that nobody in the village had wanted to buy it. <<If your grandmother had wanted someone to live there, she wouldn't have let it rot for decades,>> she told her in a voice that trembled slightly.
Sofía llegó al pueblo una tarde de noviembre.
Sofía arrived at the village on a November afternoon.
Las calles estaban vacías y las ventanas de las demás casas habían sido tapiadas con tablones.
The streets were empty and the windows of the other houses had been boarded up with planks.
La casa de su abuela se alzaba al final de un camino de tierra, rodeada de árboles secos cuyos troncos se retorcían como si sufrieran.
Her grandmother's house rose at the end of a dirt path, surrounded by dry trees whose trunks twisted as if they were suffering.
Cuando abrió la puerta principal, un olor a humedad y a algo dulce que no supo identificar le golpeó la cara.
When she opened the front door, a smell of damp and of something sweet that she could not identify hit her in the face.
La casa tenía siete habitaciones.

Sofía las recorrió todas excepto la última del pasillo, cuya puerta estaba cerrada con un candado oxidado.
Sofía went through all of them except the last one in the corridor, whose door was locked with a rusty padlock.

On the walls of the corridor, someone had carved marks with a sharp object: crosses, circles, and a phrase that was repeated over and over. <<Do not open.

Aquella noche, Sofía se despertó a las tres de la madrugada.
That night, Sofía woke up at three in the morning.
Algo arañaba la puerta cerrada con candado al final del pasillo.
Something was scratching at the padlocked door at the end of the corridor.
El sonido era rítmico, como si alguien estuviera intentando salir desde dentro.
The sound was rhythmic, as if someone were trying to get out from inside.
Se dijo a sí misma que serían ratones, que la casa vieja estaría llena de ellos.
She told herself that it would be mice, that the old house must be full of them.
Pero los ratones no golpean.
But mice do not knock.
Y lo que ella oía eran golpes, espaciados y deliberados, como nudillos contra la madera.
And what she heard were knocks, spaced and deliberate, like knuckles against the wood.
A la mañana siguiente, Sofía encontró una carta dentro de un cajón de la cocina.
The following morning, Sofía found a letter inside a kitchen drawer.

It was written in her grandmother's handwriting.

In it she explained that the room at the end had been sealed in nineteen sixty-three, after her little sister, Inmaculada, had died of fever inside that very room. <<Since then, something lives there,>> her grandmother had written. <<It is not Inmaculada, but it wears her face.
Me suplicó que le abriera la puerta.
It begged me to open the door for it.
Si yo hubiera cedido, habría sido mi fin.>>
If I had given in, it would have been my end.>>
Sofía dejó caer la carta.
Sofía dropped the letter.
Desde el pasillo, los golpes habían vuelto a empezar.
From the corridor, the knocking had started again.
Pero esta vez eran diferentes.
But this time it was different.
Ya no sonaban como nudillos contra la madera.
It no longer sounded like knuckles against the wood.
Sonaban como si alguien estuviera dando golpes desde su lado del pasillo, como si lo que fuera que habitaba aquella habitación ya hubiera salido.
It sounded as if someone were knocking from her side of the corridor, as if whatever inhabited that room had already got out.
Y entonces oyó una voz, suave y aguda como la de una niña, que susurraba su nombre una y otra vez.
And then she heard a voice, soft and high-pitched like a little girl's, whispering her name over and over.
<<Sofía... Sofía... Abre la puerta, Sofía.>> La voz venía de detrás de ella.
<<Sofía... Sofía... Open the door, Sofía.>> The voice came from behind her.
Sofía se giró lentamente.
Sofía turned around slowly.
Al final del pasillo, delante de la puerta que debería haber estado cerrada con candado, había una niña descalza vestida de blanco.
At the end of the corridor, in front of the door that should have been padlocked, there stood a barefoot girl dressed in white.
Sonreía.
She was smiling.
El candado yacía en el suelo, abierto.
The padlock lay on the floor, open.
La puerta estaba entreabierta.
The door was ajar.
Y de la oscuridad que se extendía más allá del umbral, varias manos pálidas se asomaban en silencio, esperando.
And from the darkness that stretched beyond the threshold, several pale hands were reaching out in silence, waiting.
