(The Tortilla Competition)
El pueblo de Villanueva nunca había organizado una competición de tortilla española, pero aquel año el alcalde decidió que ya era hora.
The village of Villanueva had never organised a Spanish omelette competition, but that year the mayor decided it was about time.
Colgó carteles por todas las calles e invitó a todos los vecinos a participar.
He put up posters on all the streets and invited all the neighbours to take part.
La favorita, por supuesto, era Doña Carmen, que había ganado todos los premios de cocina del pueblo durante las últimas tres décadas.
The favourite, of course, was Doña Carmen, who had won every cooking prize in the village for the last three decades.

Nobody doubted that she would win again.

On the day of the competition, ten participants placed their tortillas on the tables in the square.

Pero entonces llegó un joven que nadie conocía.
But then a young man arrived whom nobody knew.

His name was Álex and he had just moved to the village.
Puso su tortilla al final de la mesa sin decir nada.
He placed his tortilla at the end of the table without saying anything.
Los tres jueces probaron cada tortilla con mucha seriedad.
The three judges tasted each tortilla very seriously.
Cuando llegaron a la de Doña Carmen, asintieron con satisfacción.

Entonces ocurrió algo que nadie esperaba.
Then something happened that nobody expected.
Doña Carmen se acercó a la mesa de Álex, cortó un trozo de su tortilla y la probó despacio.
Doña Carmen walked over to Álex's table, cut a piece of his tortilla and tasted it slowly.
Todo el pueblo contuvo la respiración.
The whole village held its breath.
Doña Carmen masticó lentamente, cerró los ojos y se quedó en silencio durante unos segundos que parecieron eternos.
Doña Carmen chewed slowly, closed her eyes and remained silent for a few seconds that felt eternal.
Por fin, abrió los ojos y dijo con voz firme: Esta tortilla es mejor que la mía.
Finally, she opened her eyes and said in a firm voice: This tortilla is better than mine.
Todo el pueblo se quedó boquiabierto.
The whole village was left open-mouthed.
Doña Carmen sonrió y añadió: Joven, si no le importara, me encantaría que me diera la receta.
Doña Carmen smiled and added: Young man, if you wouldn't mind, I would love for you to give me the recipe.
Álex se puso rojo y confesó que la había encontrado en internet.
Álex turned red and confessed that he had found it on the internet.
Doña Carmen se echó a reír y dijo: Bueno, quizás yo también debería aprender a usar el ordenador.
Doña Carmen burst out laughing and said: Well, perhaps I should learn to use the computer too.
Aquella tarde, el pueblo entero rió más que nunca.
That afternoon, the whole village laughed more than ever.
